Violin makers planes and other small hand planes

G.E. Scarr Violinmaker’s Planes

Belonging to collector and tool seller, Jim Bode, these G.E. Scarr violin maker's planes are in near mint, and practically unused, condition and come complete with their original red japanning. Made from gunmetal, the largest plane is 2 1/8" long and has a 3/4" iron, the middle plane is 1 5/8" long with a 9/16" iron, and the smallest plane is a mere 1 3/8" long and comes with a 7/16" iron. All three of these violinmaker's planes have round soles.

Not much is known about the maker of these planes. Unfortunately we don't have an address or manufacturing date for G.E. Scarr -- let alone what other planes the company might have made. However it's obvious, from looking at the design, that they were based on violinmaking planes that were manufactured in Britain from around the late 1800's and early 1900's. Well known companies such as Edward Preston & Sons in Birmingham and Thomas Norris (maker of the famous Norris infill planes) in London were making very similar violin maker's planes to the ones shown here, so it can be loosely assumed that G.E. Scarr may have been manufacturing planes after this date.
