Well, 100 miniature boxwood planes, plus a couple of dozen more for good measure. The extras aren't just made from boxwood though as there are one or two made from other woods, such as lignum vitae.
Bill Carter is a master planemaker who has been making all kinds of planes for the past 25 years or so. His work has been featured in numerous woodworking magazines as well as a couple of books. Bill also has the distinction of being one of the first contemporary planemakers on the internet, having been interviewed by fellow planemaker C.R. Miller for Handplane Central Online (nowadays just known as Handplane Central) way back in 1999.
Bill's main passion is dovetailed box mitres made from reclaimed materials, but he's also made a heck of a lot of very small wooden planes as well - numbering well into the hundreds! Obviously it's these smaller planes that we're interested here on this site.
But why miniature planes, you ask? Well, the story goes that in one of British tool dealer David Stanley's early sales there was much interest centered around a 1-1/8" beech smoother which had somehow fetched £150. This was the smallest smoother Bill had seen and, due to the high price that it fetched, he then went home and made over 100 miniature planes in boxwood -- all in a straight run too, it should be added.
As mentioned before, Bill has since gone on to make many more miniature planes over the years.
