Violin makers planes and other small hand planes

Violin Maker’s Planes By Christopher Martyn

These violin maker's planes in cherry, elder, boxwood, lignum vitae and other exotic woods have all been made by Christopher Martyn of Winchester, Hampshire. Using his own designs and imagination, Christopher decided to make miniature planes as he needed them, being an avid maker of both violins and guitars.

The planes are constructed using the method made popular by James Krenov. The sides and core pieces have been laminated together, which makes for a quick and effective way to make woodworking planes. Of course Krenov's planes were much bigger affairs than these small ones, but the method of construction remains the same.

Most of the soles on these violin planes are slightly curved in both directions. The planes also vary slightly in size, but most are about 7/8 in. wide by 1-1/2 in. long and stand at around 5/8 in. tall.

Martyn searches through secondhand-tool shops and markets for the blades, and often uses ones from Record and Stanley plough planes. He's also been known to use old chisel blades.
