Ibex violin makers planes have been somewhat of a standard for modern luthiers. Originally designed by guitar maker Irving Sloane, these planes are cast in silicon bronze and feature either a flat or a curved bottom design for the precise shaping that is needed when making violins, lutes, guitars or other stringed instruments.
The particular planes shown here feature both flat as well as curved soles, which are radiused from back to front, as well as from side to side. The curved soles are perfect for the delicate shapes and concave surfaces found on a typical violin or viola.
The large and easily adjusted thumbscrew allows for a quick and secure adjustment of the chrome vanadium steel blade.
Additional blades are available in both standard and toothed arrangements. The toothed blades are often required for the more difficult or interlocked woods.
